What does effective writing look like?
Why study literature?
In some ways, the above questions are pretty simple and can be answered without too much trouble. For example, effective writing communicates ideas clearly. Studying literature helps us think about the world in new ways. Easy enough. However, the more I have considered these questions with students, the more I have realized how open-ended and challenging they are. Initial responses to these questions evolve during the course of a semester or year as students formulate increasingly informed and complex responses . . . and start asking big questions of their own. They start to see different ways that writing can be effective depending on different situations. They begin to understand that studying literature offers a wide range of benefits, both academically and personally. So it makes sense to use these questions to introduce and organize our work. We can address them to generate other questions and push our thinking further.
I look forward to working with you as we consider these questions in light of the work we'll do in class!
