Having studied several short stories, you are now ready to write your own amazing work of fiction. Make it school appropriate, 100 words, and incorporate at least two strategies you saw in the stories we studied in class. Due by October 31. Good luck, and have fun!

On the morning of September 4th, everything seemed big to her. The building was giant. The door was huge and the shelves were high. This is what she had been excited for? She couldn’t remember why. The pencils she had been so anxious to sharpen were lying neatly in their box, no longer appealing. Her new sparkly pink shoes were scratching her feet and the promise that she was going to have a wonderful day was quickly being broken. She didn’t even see her friend Amy. As she clutched tightly to her mom’s hand, and made her way to the massive desk near the front of the enormous room, Mrs. Peach gave her a gentle smile and the distance between them shrunk. As she arrived at the table, she looked down and saw her name written in curly pink lettering. Looking around, she grinned. The classroom seemed just her size.

Fuming over the Generals ignorance of battlefield tactics and disregard for his men, Captain Tulian rode ahead of the columns with a cohort of officers. He knew that he commanded the armies while the General commanded only words. But even still the bitter taste of taking orders from a man incapable of leading and unaware of the danger to come still lingered. But such is the result of a man born in riches and granted nobility and title without fighting a single battle. Even the men disliked him but Tulian had fought beside these men for many years, had loved and lost together, and had earned their respect.

I’m going to go to the store today. We’re out of eggs and sugar, and it’s Teddy’s birthday tomorrow. I glance at the clock. It’s 5, rush hour. The streets are sure to be packed bumper to bumper with angry drivers. Well I guess I could walk. I grab my coat to step outside when the thermometer catches my eye. 30 degrees.

After reading the first chapter, I had to stop. For a moment. That sickly feeling was in my veins again, like that cold feeling of an IV drip being pumped through your system. The seeping chill, the weeping creeping chill. My hands are always cold, of course—bad circulation, they say—but now my fingertips unfeelingly throbbed for a different reason, because the sickly feeling, that sickly feeling was here again, too.

Surrounded by the darkness, sitting in a room un-noticed, haunted by the fearful silence of mind, not worthy of love, and not worthy of acceptance. No one cares how I feel, it does not matter to anyone who comes or goes from this dreaded place. There have been too many people to count that have looked at me and continued to walk. All the battered bruises on my body ache constantly. I sit and hope; nothing ever comes of it. Just to be noticed once would be like Pooh Bear sticking his head into a pot of honey for the first time.

It was the morning of July 11th. The air was warming up, the sun coming over the mountains, and the city filled with life. 8:03 A.M. the walls shook. One foot in front of the other, using her hands to push away the air that had kept her trapped in that frame. As the used every muscle in her body and fought back those brush strokes that held her down, Mona Lisa had emerged from the entrapment. She ran. She fell in love. She tasted the fluffy pink sugar they called “cotton candy.” As the sun vanished back behind the mountains, the winds took her into a world of stares and admiration from green, blue, brown eyes from strangers. She sank back into the brush strokes, lifted her leg to fit her foot through the frame, put her serious face on, and looked ahead to the mountains remembering what it felt to be alive.

A lonely metal bench inside River Park Square, the prime location for observing innocent bystanders. Because really, what else is there to do in a mall? My eyes quickly divert to a young pig-tailed girl. She stands there alone with a vacant expression, she's lost. The tears begin streaming down her face and her expression has transformed into sheer terror. An older woman quickly sprints to her side. Crisis averted. Here comes a tall, muscular, tan man at 2 o' clock. Oh no he just caught me staring, quick look away, play it cool. Across from me is an elderly couple engaged in deep conversation. "Lois you can't just go spending our retirement fund on cashmere sweaters and wool socks!" "Oh Frankie, just live a little." Yeah Frankie live a little.

It flew higher than the trees, diving and plateauing on the flow of currents. It procured its midday meal and chewed as it swayed with a beetle’s tree. As it left its perch, it came across the predator. The velocity caused this little blue bird to drop, as the hawk chased after; determined to feed. The panic in the blue bird’s eyes pushed the bird faster and faster, beyond river canyon, tree until… The hawk swiped the blue wing and snapped for the bloodied body. But the corporeal wing drew the blue bird away; and fluttering madly, found shelter. The hawk screeched and flew away, fuming with loss.

Flames jump higher and higher towards the wilting carcass, with every second counting down to his impending death. The moment hope is lost; a face of beauty appears in a shimmering yellow helmet. Only able to lay limp, this gorgeous stranger struggled to lift his body. Down the fifteen flights of stairs they went, waiting with baited breath to see if the one he was waiting for lay in wait on the ground.

His first thought after waking was, 'I must still be dreaming'. The room glowed orange through closed eyelids, and an acrid smell filled the air. He was suddenly aware of a warm feeling. Very warm. Hot, so stifling he found it hard to breathe. His eyes snapped open, tears already forming from the smoke. Fire. Sudden, primal fear took over, leaving only one thought in his mind: Escape. Bolting out of bed, he ran for the door. Grabbed the handle. Yelped as it burned his hand. Blisters were already forming. Slowly, too slowly, rational thought took over, lack of oxygen making it difficult to thing. Running back to the bed, he grabbed a blanket. Took it into the adjoining bathroom and stepped into the shower. He turned on the water, soaking the blanket and himself, before running back into the bedroom. It had gotten hotter, if that was possible. By now so much of the door had burned that what remained crumbled as he slammed into it. He felt a moment of hope, quickly crushed as he looked around. Fire raged everywhere. His meager protection would be useless against it. An idea flickered across his mind, gone before he could hold on to it. Slowly, the realization came to him: he wasn’t getting out.

It was the first day of spring, and a beautiful day, setting the standard for the rest of the season. Bounding down the stairs, she grabbed her sneakers that had been untouched for months. She flung open the front door, cranked up her favorite Harry Potter book on tape, and sprinted down the driveway, hitting the pavement with purpose present in every step. Time seemed to fly by, and realizing her surroundings, she thinks to herself, “Wow! I’m already halfway down the street!” She waves to her astounded neighbors, glad that someone has witnessed her hard work. Her exhaustion growing, she felt a raindrop hit her shoulder. Shocked in the change of weather, she immediately changed her course. As she made her way back home, she thought to herself, “Maybe next year…”

The game was riding on this pk, with less than a minute to go and down by one point, this goal was vital. The sun was beating down upon him as he set the ball up for the kick, twisting it in his hands making sure it was just right. He knew that he was ready, even when the exhaustion from the 90 minutes of intense play weighed down on him. He stepped back and breathed slowly in anticipation. The other team goaded and taunted him as he prepared himself for the next move, but nothing could shatter his concentration. The referee’s whistle pierced the hot air and he began slowly to the ball and then broke into a run, he knew where he wanted to place it, bottom right corner six inches away from the post. All his practice and hard work into this one shot. His foot smacked the ball, and it soared over the goal… He missed the shot. As he sank to his knees, the agony flooded through him as he realized he had failed his team.

As the days slowly grew shorter and darker, the trees slowly began to dawn their colorful apparel. For a short period, it was their time to show off to the world. Although it seemed to be the end of many long, warm summer days, and the lifeless winter was on the doorstep, it was time for the maple, elm, and oak to shine out to the world. They gave a distraction and display for the onlooker, to give comfort that everything was not ending.

I was sure it was the end, my whole 17 years flashing before my eyes. It all came down to this moment; all the memories, all the laughter, all the tears came rushing to my mind as I looked my biggest fear in the face. I mean sure I lived the life any seventeen year girl would want..I was able to learn how to tie my shoe, fell in love in a matter of hours (and then fell out of love in a matter of hours), had about 1,000 facebook friends.. What more could you want? I mean I never did get the chance to learn to ride a bike or have a face to face conversation with any of 1,000 closest friends, but those are minor details if you ask me.. Anyways back to the dire situation at hand. I was contemplating who to share my last words with, should I phone mom? Maybe even shoot Dad a text? No they won’t reply.. Of course they chose tonight of all nights out of the year to disconnect from the outer world. Oh why did this have to happen to me? And why do I have to go this way? No more of the craziness it’s time to face the music.. should I take this leap of faith that could end it all? That five foot hop from the couch to face the beast… the wolf spider.

I open the door to the fridge and the light illuminates a labyrinth of food, packed into the small space. Mom must have gone grocery shopping today. There’s milk hidden behind a bottle of some greenish juice substance and I think that might be a jar of pickles in the far back towards the right. Disinterested, I quietly close the door and hear a clinking of bottles as it gently falls shut. The freezer looks like a logic puzzle, “Try to get to these waffles without knocking anything onto the floor.” Too much work. The cabinets are an infinite maze of crackers, soup cans, and instant rice boxes. How can they hold so much food? It’s back to the fridge and I give another glance at the mystery Tupperware that’s been there since who knows when. Stepping back and looking around the small kitchen one thought crosses my mind, “There’s nothing to eat.”

The winds danced through my hair, feet thudding against the hard and earthy ground. A broad grin struck itself on my face as I freed myself once again. Not only a hobby, but a lifestyle, as I patrolled the night on the lookout for candy thieves. This night, unlike any other, seemed to bring out the devilish and snarky attitudes of even the most innocent kids. With my trusty horse, Shadowmere, as my companion I rode on through the darkness, scanning for the scurrying scandals. With a swift turn of my head, my eyes met a particular scandal, his hand clutched with candy and his breath loud with exhaustion. Promptly, rearing my horse fully to the sky, I bolted after the fiend. In a flash, I whisked him off his feet. A short ride followed, in which I dropped him with the other victims upon the Ghouls Graveyard. Not tonight my friend, for justice shines its bright light of glory. My legacy here is done…until next year:)

He did not see who left the box. It was a tiny thing, wrapped in neat paper and ties with a bow. He lifted it slowly, inspecting the wrapping. It surprised him how little he cared about what it may contain. There was no reason to leave it unopened, yet he couldn’t bring himself to open it. So he dug through his kitchen cupboard and found an old marker. On the box, he scribbled “Hope”. He put the box on his window sill. The box sat there a long while, unopened. He would never know the box was empty.

“Is it really ok to do that?” she asked him politely. Of course. Not that it mattered. The style of the piece was dark, tragic, and generally quite opaque. Idiosyncratic? Nope. All too familiar. That’s what happens when everything is written by wealthy white European males. He threw the piece into the fire, and watched the patches crisp up, and quickly bend into black spirals, as if the pages themselves were dancing painfully into the unnatural shape.

Once upon a time in a moderate-sized house in a decently well-off neighborhood on the north side of a relatively large city, there lived a boy. This boy was quite an intelligent fellow, and he had many very good friends. He spent most of his time reading books, obediently doing his homework, and daydreaming about the beautiful girl who sat next to him during lunch. Her name was Sally. The boy truly loved her – however, she knew nothing about it, because the boy was very shy. So, day after day, the boy went to school, did his work, and suffered quietly as all the other boys in his class flirted with Sally.

When I stare into those round, swimming pool eyes the blood in my veins rushes to my heart's right ventricle and back into my left atrium so quickly that my breathing stops for three fourths of a second. We are at a park lying on a striped blanket while random passerbys shift their eyes upon us with envy. We are holding hands while eating a sundae with toppings piled higher than the empire state building. The scene transforms to a car ride. We are jamming out to the new Taylor Swift song, belting every lyric perfectly without any shame.

Dolly was fed up. Why didn't her parents understand? She was NOT interested in Philip. She felt so confined in her life; nothing was hers to decide anymore, even when it came to marriage. No one should ever have to feel trapped as a caged canary, she wanted to fly. Breathing in the crisp, salty ocean breeze, standing on the deck of the ship she gazed at the horizon, past the horizon. There had to be something more out there for her, this was not her life. Vowing to herself, she would not let the mundane woes of the typical housewife be her fate. Rifling through her bag, she found an old crumpled paper and pen. Lying in the corner of the deck was an empty Coke bottle. Feverishly scrawling on the page,

At long last he had managed to separate himself from them. He scanned around. Nothing. Nothing but the whitewashed horizon of the Arctic Tundra. The small grouping of trees in the distance withheld the only potential trace of followers. He took what seemed to be his first full breath in a matter of months. What was this new sensation that had just surfaced? It was as if a long lost friend from his childhood had shown resurfaced suddenly "No it shouldn't be. It can't be. Not now, and not yet", he muttered. This slight bit of hope, whether recognized as existing or not, was a refreshing change, a small match dimly illuminating his soul. Yet he knew how dangerous this hope was, however slight it may be. He even caught himself going as far as to dream of escaping his pursuers and flying off to the tropics where he would never again be troubled. He had soon made his way to the grouping of trees. He did not even second-guess his actions as he began kindling a small but visible flame. Enthralled by the dancing flames, he pulled more dry wood which he stored in his pack. Soon the fire was bright, brilliant and roasting along quite well. Distracted and off guard, he allowed this hope to ignite his dreams once more. How great it would be to be able relax, to lounge, to sleep….. Just a moment couldn’t hurt… He had just broken his one rule. As he lay incapacitated by sleep, a large white paw stamped out the fire. His pursuers had found him. He had been so distracted to not have realized that their white fur would have blended in with the landscape. And now they caught him. They had him after months of pursuit. His greatest fear. Bears.

Sparkles of white drifted in the air. It was before sunrise, yet everything was bright. The scent of cookies filled the air. A jingle could be heard from room next door. The boy has been waiting the whole year for this day. The countdown started on the 26th of December: 365, 364, 363… It was odd though. He did not even realize Thanksgiving had passed. The boy stood tall struggling to look over shoulders waiting and wondering what the crowd was gathered for. The people were still, they seemed to know what was coming. But the boy was short, he couldn’t see ahead of him, what was there was unknown but the boy was anxious to find out. He tried to push his way through the masses but they were still, grounded as if cemented, headstrong. He struggled but was relentless because what laid ahead was vast making the possibilities endless and his search ongoing. A man at the front begged the people to get ready and this prompted some to move quickly, others to follow and some to spiral towards somewhere but the boy stood still. The tracks buzzed then the ground shook and the trains arrived. People rushed on and the man said, “They’ll come back next hour.”

Little Minky finally had gotten what he wanted. His mother had given in, the shining white and orange koi in hand. He ran to put them in the pond. The rays of sun piercing though the surface casting the shadow of Bonsai tree on the bottom. Minky let them free. Quickly they darted into the dark corners avoiding the light. He tossed food in, the fish slowly eased into the light. They quickly grabbing a bite and darting back to the corners. Each morning Minky would go out and feed his fish in the bright light of dawn. Slowly coaxing his fish into the light, staying there evermore with each feeding. Crisp mornings were coming, iridescent light cut short by the fog. Petite black spots started to appear on their sides, gaining a few more every month. Then one day Minky went out to feed his Koi, he found the spines and heads on the bank. The raccoons had decided to feed first.

He took her by the hand, but may have held her a moment too long. To the man who lived in this very moment, this girl was unquestionably, unequivocally, and absolutely impossibly without a doubt the most beautiful entity anyone had ever had the pleasure of laying their undoubtedly unworthy eyes on. The first thing that caught the man’s attention how asymmetrical her face was. He had never been interested in the symmetry of someone’s face before. Naturally, his gaze then travelled to her slightly oversized ears. The man found this endearing. He had never seen a women so mesmerizing.
