Performing The Tempest
Because plays are meant to be performed, not just read . . .
Because literature communicates important ideas about life in new, creative, and insightful ways . . .
Because I know youve all been waiting for your chance to shine on the stage . . .
A major theatrical company has asked you to perform a new version of The Tempest. To do this, you will need to work in a team of 3-5 people to perform one section from the play in an appealing, effective, and abridged manner.
Checklist:
--Choose a section from the play to perform. (This will be accomplished through a draft.)
--Reduce your section of the original script to a manageable, 5-7 minute skit. This will require you to synthesize the most important information from the section.
--Divide parts so that everyone plays an active role in the production.
--Choose a new setting that nonetheless effectively communicates the story and ideas of the play.
--Use props and costumes that fit the setting and help you to communicate the story and ideas of the play.
--Modify the language of the play so that it fits your setting but also remains true to the original meaning.
--Introduce the scene to establish not only roles and setting, but also the big idea of the play your scene emphasizes (e.g. revenge).
